MANHATTAN GOES SMOKE FREE

Manhattan voters approved a smoke free ordinance for the city on November 4, 2008. The ballot ordinance was the result of a petition initiative by Clean Air Manhattan that collected over 2,400 signatures to put the measure on the November ballot. The ordinance passed with 56.2% of the vote and will make all offices, restaurants, and bars within the city smoke free as well as the outdoor seating areas and within 20 feet of building entrances. Since the ordinance was placed on the ballot by a petition initiative, the city council cannot change it for 10 years.
