On March 16, 2009 the McPherson City Commission passed an ordinance regulating smoking in public places within the city. The ordinance allows smoking in no more than 50 percent of enclosed dining space in local restaurants. This "smoking section" must be enclosed with ventilation that leads directly outside and must remain a "smoking section" during posted business hours. Bars that gross less than 50 percent of their revenue from the sale of food or non-alcoholic beverages are exempt from the smoking ordinance. Private clubs, fraternal organizations and tobacco shops are also exempt. The ordinance takes effect on May 18, 2009.
