EMPORIA CLEAN INDOOR AIR ORDINANCE WINS AGAIN IN A RECOUNT
In a recount of votes concerning Emporia’s smoking ban April 14th, the “yes” votes stayed the same at 2,369, while the “no” votes lost two to come out at 2,361.
Lyon County clerk Tammy Vopat announced the results before the Board of Canvassers Tuesday after the recount was complete. The result of the recount means Emporia voters chose a more comprehensive smoking ordinance over one that allowed restaurant and bar exemptions. The comprehensive ordinance is now in effect.

UPDATE:
Emporia voters upheld a comprehensive smoke free ordinance that was challenged on an April 7th ballot.
After reviewing provisional ballots on April 10th, the county commission certified the final vote count which had supporters winning by six votes. The smoke free ordinance that provides protections from second hand smoke in public places and workplaces is now in effect.
EMPORIA TO VOTE ON SMOKE FREE ORDINANCE
Emporia Residents will have the opportunity to confirm the recently passed smoke free ordinance on the April ballot. The City Commission passed a smoke free ordinance for the city by a vote of 3-2 on December. However, a group of local business owners collected enough signatures to put the issue to a vote. While the ordinance was set to start in early March, the commission however has voted to postpone the implementation date until after the April vote. If confirmed by Emporia citizens, the ordinance will make all workplaces, restaurants and bars within the city will be smoke free.
